Intro to Card Types – Weapons

The MechWarrior Tactics team today, released the second in their series of ‘Dev Diaries’ dedicated to introducing us to cards.. we get a look at the weapons, and, more importantly.. the thought process behind getting from point a to point b.

First.. big news in the post.. Armor and Weapon values are multiplied by 10 (so AC/20 does 200 damage).  While this is a pretty big deviation from the TableTop rules.. since Armor and Weapons are being multiplied by the same amount..it’s a wash.  The flexibility that the Dev team gains by doing this makes it well worth it (+1 damage becomes much less Over Powered on this scale).

To go with this change, the Devs made another, more controversial change… the switch to a percentile based system, instead of 2D6.  The Dev post isn’t clear on if this change is across the board, or just on To-hit.  This, like the x10 change gives the devs a lot of wiggle room for bonuses.. +1 to hit on 2d6 is HUGE.. +1 on a percentile scale..not so much.

These two changes, while big..make sense for the type of game MWT is.. if they didn’t make these changes.. they wouldn’t really be able to provide any differentiation between weapons..and with only 17 weapons in the game (3025 era)… that’s not a lot of Collectible Cards for a Collectible Card game.

Let’s look at the good stuff though… the weapon cards!

KAPOW!

This card is for an Ultra Rare (based on the filename being “UR AC20”) Autocannon 20, called the Sword of Kali.

Starting at the top… We have the Weapon Type (AC20) and Name (Sword of Kali), underneath that, we have manufacturer information (Kali Yama), Weapon type again (AC20), and it’s “family” (Ballistic).

At the bottom, we have “Giantkiller” which is one of the bonus types mentioned in the article.  If the “Giantkiller” criteria is met.. the weapon will do +7 damage.  Underneath that, we have a row of standard icons providing information about the card.

Damage (200), Range (0-3-6-9), Heat (7), and finally CV (178).

Note:  I’m guessing on these, we have no official confirmation..but, if you look at the icons next to the values, it makes sense.

Finally, we have the ‘set’ information, just like on the Chassis cards.. this card is 216 out of a set of 728.

All in all.. this is a very good introduction to Weapon cards, and well worth the read so you can see what kind of effort the dev team has put into this feature.
